I wrote a 2000 tete- essay last night. I finished it at 4 in the morning. As a result of god for energy drinks. Now I have to write another essay, due Friday.   For all those who attend to, here is my essay. I wonder if they put a character limit on these blog posts... I assume now is the best time to find out.  

1. The historian Ferdinand Schevill wrote that Florence was governed by ‘an concealed Medicean sceptre’. What does he designate? And do you agree?

The Medici family held a ardent deal of power in Florence, and it can be argued that this power was complete. Schevill wrote that they governed with an invisible sceptre, and this make an effort will discuss what he meant by this, and whether I believe he was correct in saying it. The significance of a sceptre will be analysed, as will the definition of invisible to be hand-me-down for the purposes of this essay. I will then discuss the power of the at Medici, from Cosimo di Giovanni de’ Medici through to Piero di Lorenzo de’ Medici, its limitation and whether the term ‘Medicean sceptre’ is fitting; followed by a discussion of whether this power was indeed invisible. At the end of the day the power of the later Medici, the Medici dukes, will be examined.

Before prevailing any further, the term ‘Medicean sceptre’ must be defined. The sceptre had grand meaning in the Renaissance, a prime example of its use being in Lorenzetti’s Buon governo frescoes. A sceptre is held by the put faith in b plan on Ben Comun, a ruling figure prominent in the semblance of good government.[1] A sceptre was traditionally held by representations of kings, and was seen as ‘the tokening of supreme authority’.[2] As one of the ‘symbols of ascendancy’, a Medicean sceptre would imply that the Medici held almost dictatorial power over Florence.[3] This, therefore, is the definition I will use for the purposes of this paper.
