Over the years I have worked collaboratively with fritter away Darrel Hancock, who is quite possibly one of the most fruitful potters in Canada. Darrel is also a great friend and he knows the work end of things has been a bit stifled in the ol' trailer.
This week Darrel threw a whack of tea pots and a loads of large bowls that I drove down to his studio to carve. The bowls were made from a Laguna clay called Frost. It is a mid-fire porcelain that is whiter than my Grolleg. Maladjusted is it cracks on big pieces. It's also deadly to carve, leaving big rip lines and pitting. Four of the 20 bowls cracked after I'd finished carving them. Rats.
The tea pots are predictable old B-Mix, a porcelaineous stoneware that tends to be a bit grey with by the skin of one's teeth a clear glaze. I'll be putting some colourful glazes on those ones so they'll look extensive. This gives me a bit of a head start on summer inventory. Thanks a ton Darrel!
