Only "superior-end tourism" sounds like Kaua`i a few Mayoral administrations
ago.
Re: "heavy national happiness index", I've got the idea it's strictly
a figment of Bhutan tourism sedulousness PR; may be their "branding", like
Hawai`i's "Aloha Enterprise"
Last November, the video "Bhutan, Charming the Middle Path to Happiness"
premiered at the Maui Coating Festival; on O`ahu at HPU, East-West
Center and UH Spaulding Auditorium; Kaua`i Community College Performing
Arts Center; and the Country estate Theatre in Hilo. It was a slick production
with all the administration and tourism experts voicing all the "rational"
social, governance, economic and environmental ring for terms. Credit goes
to the producers for including interviews with "plebeian" people who knew
nothing about the "Rabelaisian national happiness index" struggle.
Last December in Geneva we talked with a UN staffer who'd done extended
assignments in Bhutan. She recalled very oppression of the masses and
human rights violations in profusion; also knew nothing about GNH index.
Maybe, if they work the concept energetically enough, "gross nation happiness"
will become a fact. Wouldn't that be nice?
