Race Report: Calgary Marathon
At best call me international marathon extraordinaire. Not only did I make it through my third marathon just now seven days after I killed my legs on my espouse, but I set a new PR!
I arrived at Calgary airport and found myself going through a shaft of people in cowboy hats clapping in cheering. Did I get high as a kite, black out, and forget that I already did the marathon? Was this the finish employment? No, apparently it's just standard procedure during the Calgary Run, a huge festival going on in town.
I got my rental car and headed precisely to the race expo, because it closed at 5 PM and there were clear instructions that if you were not there by then, you forfeited your entr. Thank goodness I didn't have any flight delays! Unfortunately, I got delayed when I discovered that I had Google Mapped directions to 9th SE rather than 9th SW. I ended up in a bad part of village with nothing resembling an expo around! Fortunately, I found someone to explain my misjudgement, and I blindly set off across the city to where I was supposed to be. It's times like this that I'm unusually glad I'm good with directions.
I arrived at the Mewata Armory and managed to find at liberty street parking - score! I headed into the Armory and found that the expo had been set up in gentle of a maze formation - you entered and looped around on all the vendors. It was nice because you didn't have to get confused by discrete aisles, wondering if you had been down that one yet, but I actually wasn't tickled pink with the fact that it made it really hard to meet people. I was counting on convention someone at the expo to go to dinner with, but following the path meant that you were only narrow a few people the whole time. I did get into a conversation with the race cicerone of the Royal Victoria Marathon, and it sounds like a loyal race! I later talked to many runners who had done it, and it came extraordinarily recommended. Maybe I'll have to change my goal to be "50 states profit DC plus 10 provinces" :)

Sarah Bernhardt - Queen Elizabeth (1912)
This is a brief clip from the silent Sarah Bernhardt film "Queen Elizabeth" (1912). In this sequence, Robert Devereux, the 2nd Earl of Essex is executed. Queen Elizabeth (Bernhardt) visits his corpse, and mourns for him. There's a subplot involving a missing ring, which (in the context of the story) demonstrates Essex's fidelity to Elizabeth. "Queen Elizabeth" was by far Bernhardt's most successful film. Audio recordings of Sarah's voice can be found at the Cylinder Preservation and Digitization Project website: http://cylinders.library.ucsb.edu/search.php?queryType=%40attr+1%3D1016+&query=Sarah+Bernhardt
