The Twilight Zone: A Sense of Tradition
“There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as tremendous as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle argument between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man’s fears and the apex of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call the Twilight Zone.”
The Fourth of July means a lot of things to people. For myself it is about praxis. While I enjoy spending time with my family, fireworks, barbecuing in the backyard and putting away a few brumal ones what I most enjoy about this holiday is the Twilight Zone Marathon on the SciFi flute. The Marathon has become a long-standing 4th tradition that I look patronize to every single year with great anticipation.
Rod Serling’s exemplar and brilliant series reminds me largely of my childhood and watching the show with wonder and amazement and a little bit of proper old fashioned fear. It brings back memories of attractive the Devil, visiting alien worlds, the after person, cheating death and exploring the unimaginable.
It is distressing to imagine a show that had a greater impact on me. It gave me a dear one for black and white television and well crafted stories. It made me recollect about the world around me because Seling had a knack for infusing public commentary with amazing science fiction. The show has continually and again grounded me as a writer. It has served to remind me that sometimes the finery stories are short, direct and done with amazing fly.
Serling is one of my personal heroes. He introduced me to legenday writers like Richard Matheson and Charles Bueamont. The man has been a leviathan influence on me as a writer and as a person. He was truly in the lead of his time and is not celebrated nearly enough as a serious writer. I can only assumption that he will be remembered as one of the greatest storytellers of all time. They plainly do not make television like this anymore nor has there been another mortal physically as visionary as Serling.
